Atty. Tina Torres announces run for 288th District Court

Tina Torres
288th District Court candidate
Dear Friends --
As some of you are aware, I've decided to run for the 288th Judicial District Court in 2010. This seat is a civil district court bench recently filled by Governor Perry after Judge Lori Massey resigned her position late last year. Because the judgeship is an elected position, I firmly believe that the citizens of our County should have a choice in who holds this public office.
At this time, I am the only opposition to the bench filled by Governor Perry's appointee. The election of our government by the people is the foundation of our Democracy, and the role of a District Court Judge is an extremely important one.
I believe that a Judge should have broad trial experience, a devout commitment to justice, and that he or she should be a leader not only in the courtroom but in the community. I have the experience, the leadership, and the commitment that make me an ideal candidate for this position.
Pilar Coolinta said, "The mind determines what is possible, and the heart surpasses it." It is with great determination and much heart that I begin my campaign and ask for your support. Please click on the link below if you'd like to learn more about my background and the qualities I feel I will bring to the bench.
Please note, too, that we are working on a website and gathering information for our database. If you would like to be excluded from future communications, kindly let me know.
Thank you!--Tina Torres

This Friday, June 5th, marks an historic event in San Antonio. Forty years ago on this date, the city's first public four-year university was established.
The University of Texas at San Antonio was officially given the green light for creation through a bill signed by Gov. Preston Smith in 1969. The historic signing took place in front of the Alamo, where Smith signed his name to the legislation using the back of its creator, Rep. Frank Lombardino, as a writing board.

Mike Villarreal
State Rep.
Local Leaders Urge Governor to Support Villarreal’s “Jobs and Education for Texans” and “Green Jobs” Programs
Press Conference
Monday, June 8th @ 9:30 a.m.
City Hall steps
Texas currently faces growing shortages of the skilled workers that help attract and retain business. The Legislature recently adopted legislation by State Representative Mike Villarreal, H.B. 1935, which will create the “Jobs and Education for Texans” program to provide support for innovative and successful programs that help low-income students attend community and technical colleges.
The bill includes a program to provide grants to non-profit organizations -- such as Project Quest in San Antonio -- that are providing training and support to unemployed and underemployed Texans. H.B. 1935 also creates the “Green Jobs Skills Development Fund” in order to enhance job skills and career opportunities that result in high wage jobs in fields such as renewable energy and energy efficient construction.
Rep. Villarreal will be joined by County Judge Nelson Wolff, Mayor Julian Castro, Reverend Walter D’Heedene of COPS & The Metro Alliance. A student who has participated in Project Quest’s job training program will also be present to share his personal story.
"This legislation answers our community's highest concern during this economic slow down: job creation," Villarreal said. "This legislation sends a clear message -- if you want to work hard, we want to invest in you and clear a path for you to get ahead."
"This legislation fits perfectly with our goals to elevate the educational level of our work force and to grow the local job base," Mayor Julián Castro said.

San Antonio Express News Recommends Reed Williams (photo) for San Antonio City Council, District 8!
Sunday, May 31st, the San Antonio Express News made their recommendations in the City Council runoffs. Here is what the editorial said:
"And in the District 8 runoff, Reed Williams is the right choice. Williams faces Michael Berlanga.
"A retired petroleum refining and marketing officer, Williams' strong business background will serve the district and the city well. He is prepared to serve at a time when balancing the budget will be a tough job.
" Williams also has a lengthy record of community involvement ranging from coaching soccer to serving on the San Antonio Symphony Board to raising funds for the American Heart Association and United Way. We strongly recommend that District 8 voters cast their ballots for Williams in the runoff."
Click here to read the complete editorial...
Join with the San Antonio Express News and vote for Reed Williams. Early Voting began on Monday, June 1st and ends on Tuesday, June 9th. Election Day is Saturday, June 13th.
